Faculty Open Rank - African American Literature (English) in Bronx, New York

The Department of English invites applications for a full-time tenured or tenure-track position in African American Literature, beginning Fall 2020. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Candidates must have an active record of research and scholarship and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

We seek a specialist in any period or area of African American or Black literature and culture, including but not limited to the African Diaspora, Caribbean Studies, African American Rhetorics, Black Film and Media, Black Feminisms, and African American Print Culture. Interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches to content and methods are welcome, as is comparative study of ethnic American or postcolonial literatures.

In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in African American literature, the successful candidate will be expected to teach core English Department literature courses, as well as general education and composition courses. The candidate will also be expected to be an active scholar (via conference presentations, journal articles, and book publication) and to provide service to the department, college, and university through advising, committee membership, and administrative assignments normally associated with a full-time tenure-track academic appointment. Evening teaching may be required.

Professorial ranks at Lehman teach 18 hours (6 courses) per year. Teaching is reduced for untenured professorial faculty by eight courses over the first five years for scholarly development. Lehman College and CUNY funding is available through competitive grants for research, travel, and professional development. All faculty are encouraged to seek external funding.

One of nine departments in the School of Arts and Humanities, English values its ties with departments – such as African American Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, and Journalism and Media Studies – while it also serves the larger College through courses in First-Year Composition, General Education, and Writing-in-the-Disciplines (for majors in Natural and Social Sciences and in Health Sciences). English students specialize in Literature, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and (at the M.A. level) Writing and Rhetoric.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English, African American Literature, Comparative Literature, or a

closely related field in hand by the commencement of the appointment on August 26, 2020. Also

required are the proven ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and

the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

COMPENSATION

Salaries are subject to the Professional Staff Congress-CUNY salary schedule http://www.psccuny. org/contract/psc-cuny-contract-salary-schedule. Salaries are commensurate with education and experience.
