General Statement of Duties:   

Full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in American Literature, teaching multi-ethnic American, Native American, and/or African American literature and culture and post-colonial studies, with a subspecialty in ESL/ELL, and ability to teach all levels of first-year writing courses. Applicants must possess the knowledge, skills, and life experiences to address the cultural and educational needs of a diverse student population and provide guidance to supporting instruction and to developing assistance for English Language Learners in negotiating college-level writing and reading as bilingual, multi-lingual or non-native learners. Responsibilities also include teaching writing support classes, and providing guidance to supporting instruction and to developing assistance for English Language Learners in negotiating college-level writing and reading as bilingual, multi-lingual or non-native learners. Duties also include advising and committee service. Experience teaching in a college or university required. Teaching load 4/4.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Teach multi-ethnic American, Native American, and/or African American literature and culture and post-colonial studies, teaching English Studies majors as well as students in other majors across the campus.
2. Teach ESL/ELL and provide guidance to supporting instruction and to developing assistance for English Language Learners in negotiating college-level writing and reading as bilingual, multi-lingual or non-native learners.
3. Teach all levels of first-year writing courses and help develop and teach writing support classes.
4. Teaching work load (24 semester hours of credit of instruction per school year), and preparation for classroom instruction.
5. Provide student assistance, including but not limited to academic advising.
6. Participate in curriculum review and development, program reviews and student outcomes assessment.
7. Attend university functions, including commencement; convocation; and faculty, committee, and departmental meetings.
8. Participate in scheduled orientation and registration programs.
9. Serve on department and university committees.
10. Engage in continuing scholarship and professional activities, which may include contribution to the content of the discipline, participation in or contribution to professional organizations and societies, public service, and contributions to the professional growth and development of the university community.
11. Opportunities to teach summer, winter term, online and undergraduate and graduate evening courses. 

Requirements:

1. Ph.D. in American Literature with a focus in multi-ethnic American, Native American, and/or African American literature and culture and post-colonial studies, and ESL/ELL certification required.
2. Experience teaching in a college or university required.
3. Evidence of scholarship required.
4. Ability to work effectively with a diverse student body.
5. Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI) as well as a completed background check satisfactory to the university.
6. Ability to perform all duties with or without reasonable accommodations.
7. Experience serving, and/or research related to diverse, multi-cultural populations is preferred.
