The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Furman University invites applications for an open-rank (assistant, associate, or professor of Spanish), tenure-track appointment, effective August 2022. Located in Greenville, SC, Furman University is a nationally-ranked, top 50 liberal arts college which aspires to become a leader among its peer institutions in making meaningful and lasting progress in responding to the needs and concerns of people of color, women, and those who identify as LGBTQIA+. Ph.D. in Spanish (literature or linguistics) preferred by August 1, 2022; ABD considered. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English and prior teaching experience required. Candidates must demonstrate scholarly potential as well as commitment to and excellence in undergraduate instruction at all levels of Spanish language, culture, and linguistics or literature. They must be dedicated mentors, enthusiastic study away directors, and energetic contributors to The Furman Advantage (https://www.furman.edu/furman-advantage/). Specialty open, but we would be especially interested in candidates who have demonstrated research and pedagogical expertise in topics relating to one or more of the following: marginalized communities; race and ethnicity; language and gender identity; translation studies; transatlantic studies; Spanish for heritage speakers; and Spanish for the professions. Cross-disciplinary intersections with our new Africana Studies major and existing minor programs in African-American and Diaspora Cultures, Film Studies, Latin American and Latinx Studies, Linguistics, Poverty Studies, and/or Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies a plus. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and be committed to assisting the university in its continuing efforts to become a model of inclusive excellence. They will also demonstrate the enthusiasm and potential to make dynamic new contributions in line with The Furman Advantage.
Teaching load is five courses per year. Responsibilities include directing study abroad; involvement in co-curricular activities; teaching first-year seminars; offering interdisciplinary courses that contribute to other programs; pursuing an active research agenda; advising and mentoring; and university service.
