Job Summary

Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics invites applications for a full-time core candidate Assistant or Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Poetics, specializing in creative nonfiction. We seek a candidate with a strong history of publication, including at least one book of creative nonfiction, and a record of excellence in teaching a range of genres and forms, including cross-genre and text & image. Additional experience with Latinx literature, the Black Arts Movement, queer literature & theory, Asian-American literature, or indigenous literatures is keenly sought. An ideal candidate will also have the potential for developing, administering, and leading the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics following a period of mentorship. As a department, we are actively seeking to diversify our faculty.

Duties include teaching creative writing workshops, literary studies, and professional development courses across the department’s programs (undergraduate, graduate, and low-residency graduate), advising MFA thesis students; serving the department and university; and contributing to the creative, intellectual, and contemplative culture of the Jack Kerouac School through individual and collaborative efforts, while promoting diversity and inclusivity. Teaching load: 3/3 plus MFA thesis advising. Appointment to begin fall 2022.
 
The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics is a dynamic department with a progressive curriculum that includes a BA in Creative Writing & Literature, an MFA in Creative Writing & Poetics, and a low-residency MFA in Creative Writing. The Kerouac School also hosts the Summer Writing Program, an intensive colloquy of writers, artists, and performers who come together for three-weeks in the summer and offer workshops, lectures, conferences, and explore the possibilities of community. Since 1974, the Kerouac School has manifested an on-going commitment to poetry, experimental prose, activism, an engagement with material poetics––from letterpress to digital to somatic practices––small press publishing, performance, and hybrid/cross-disciplinary collaborations. Job Duties & Responsibilities

•Serve the school and university as described in the Faculty Handbook, including willingness to serve as chair in the future.
•Teach creative writing workshops, literary and poetics seminars, professional development courses, and Core courses.
•Share in the administration of the department. 
•Develop and assess curriculum.
•Engage in personal and professional development in contemplative practice and education.
•Prepare a course syllabus according to the Academic Affairs syllabi instructions and submit the syllabus to the Office of Academic Affairs by the established deadline.
•Provide five office hours each week plus availability to students by appointment.
•Serve on and actively participate in appointed university committees.
•Understand and adhere to the policies, procedures, and protocols outlined in the Faculty and Employee Handbooks.
•Obtain permission from the copyright owner for any copyrighted material to be used in sourcebooks.
•Complete any and all faculty and staff trainings as required by the Human Resources Office or the Office of Academic Affairs within the time period set for completion by those departments.

Required Qualifications

•2 years of post-graduate instructor teaching for Assistant Professor and 5 years of post-graduate instructor teaching for Associate Professor
•MFA or PhD in Creative Writing or Literature.
•College-level teaching in creative writing and literary studies.
•One published book of creative nonfiction; two books total for Assistant Professor and three books total for Associate Professor.
•Experience in teaching diverse creative nonfiction, cross-genre, text & image, literature, and poetics courses.
•Computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
•Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
•An understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression, and the impact these have on equity, access, and opportunity in higher education/the workplace.
•Commitment to co-create an inclusive community and actively participate in related professional development, including openness to feedback and ongoing self-examination.

Preferred Qualifications

•Familiarity with and commitment to Naropa University’s mission of contemplative education, diversity, and sustainability.
•Familiarity with the lineage of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, including its Summer Writing Program and the history of poetics, activism, small press publishing, letterpress print shop, performance, and hybrid/cross-disciplinary collaborations.
•Experience with correspondence-based or distance learning.
•Experience with higher education curricular planning and assessment.
•Background in teaching Latinx literature, Asian-American literature, the Black Arts Movement, queer literature & theory, or indigenous literatures.
•Experience in publishing, journal editing, overseeing events, and college-level administration.
•Supervisory experience of staff or student employees.
