Assistant Professor, English

Muhlenberg College’s English Department invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor, starting on August 1, 2022.

The English Department seeks a Shakespeare scholar who can bring a performance-oriented approach to the teaching, study, and reproduction of early modern plays. Candidates should have a related expertise in 16th and 17th century non-dramatic literatures, and demonstrate a mix of interests in areas that include the social history of the early modern period; transnational and global connections; and emerging discourses of race, class, gender, and sexualities. In addition to teaching intermediate and upper-level courses on Shakespeare and the work of other early modern dramatists and nondramatic writers, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop new approaches to these and other fields as the department reckons with ongoing changes in its mission and disciplinary orientation. Members of the department share strong interdisciplinary inclinations and regularly collaborate with faculty in other programs and departments, particularly Theatre & Dance, Film Studies, Africana Studies, Art, and Media & Communications. (Courses in dramatic literature are part of both the English and Theatre curricula, and some also count for Film Studies.)  The successful candidate will be able to contribute to these (or other) interdisciplinary areas.

Our faculty are devoted to outstanding teaching, and we have a college-wide commitment to creating inclusive pedagogies so as best to teach our diverse undergraduate population. We also share a strong commitment to scholarly and professional development, which is supplemented by support for conference travel and summer research grants. The successful candidate must combine teaching excellence and innovative pedagogy with an intellectually compelling research agenda. Full-time Muhlenberg faculty teach a 3/3 load, and all are encouraged to contribute regularly to our writing-intensive First-Year Seminar program. Faculty are expected to participate in college service, which may include participation in programs designed to support underrepresented students as the college's commitment to diversity and inclusion deepens and expands.

The successful candidate will have earned a Ph.D. by August 2022. As part of the College’s sequential approach for the health and safety of our campus community, proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required upon hire (absent an approved medical or religious exemption). Successful completion of background checks, including but not limited to child abuse clearance, education and national criminal background are also required.

To receive full consideration, candidates should upload the following as a single PDF via Muhlenberg College’s Workday Career Portal: 1) a letter of application; 2) a curriculum vita; 3) a brief (10-20 page) writing sample; 4) a statement describing experiences with and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness; 5) a single page description of a course they would particularly like to teach at Muhlenberg, possibly informed or inspired by the candidate’s research and writing agenda; and 6) contact information for three professional references. For full consideration, apply by November 5, 2021. Application review will continue until the position is filled.
