Assistant Professor in French with spec. Francophone Africa

In Fall 2022, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Global Languages and Cultures will welcome a tenure track faculty member as part of the Africana Studies cluster. This position will join faculty in the departments of English, history, global languages and cultures, philosophy, and religious studies who focus on Africana Studies. The person hired to this position will conduct scholarship, teach existing courses, develop new courses for the Africana Studies minor, and help shape the new major. This person will have an affiliation with the Race and Ethnic Studies program and may also contribute to other interdisciplinary programs. We are seeking one tenure-track assistant professor in French or related field, with a specialization in Francophone Africa and/or the Francophone African Diaspora/the Caribbean. Must be able to teach both French language and culture courses and interdisciplinary Francophone African Studies courses at all undergraduate levels. We seek a teacher-scholar prepared to contribute to the growth and development of the French program as well as the Africana Studies minor in the Race and Ethnic Studies program. Responsibilities include maintaining an active agenda of research and scholarship leading to publication; teaching three courses per semester, including undergraduate language courses in French and interdisciplinary courses in English related to Francophone Africa and/or the Francophone African Diaspora; and contributing to the department, university, and profession through service.

The Department of Global Languages and Cultures offers instruction in eight languages as well as majors and minors in French, German and Spanish, and minors in Italian, Arabic and Chinese. Minimum qualifications:

  • ABD nearing completion in French, Francophone Studies, or a related field or a foreign equivalent degree
  • Promise of excellence in:
    • research in the field of French or Francophone Studies, with an emphasis on Francophone Africa
    • teaching and developing courses and programming in French language and Francophone African literatures and cultures at the college level
  • Experience as instructor of record in teaching French language courses
  • Written fluency in English and French
  • Candidates who meet the above qualifications must also demonstrate oral fluency, which will be assessed during the initial interview.
