Head of Technical Project Management

The Modern Language Association (MLA) is currently seeking a head of technical project management to lead the project management team and oversee technological initiatives. Reporting to the director of information systems, the head will provide ongoing systems analysis to understand business needs, evaluate project costs and benefits, and implement technology solutions across the association.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and presents detailed project plans by charting deliverables and milestones for all projects
  • Implements all assigned project plans and guides projects successfully by securing approvals, reaching milestones, identifying priorities, adjusting to changes, and delivering the desired end-goal on time and on budget
  • Manages reporting staff and interdisciplinary teams to evolve requirements into clear sets of deliverables
  • Coordinates scheduling of internal resources, subcontractors, and third-party vendors
  • Coordinates delivery, distribution, logistics, financials, and approval of project materials
  • Performs risk management to minimize project risks
  • Leads team by advancing and refining project management processes
  • Maintains project process by using clear task management, issue tracking, status reports, and meeting notes
  • Communicates project progress, issues, and resolutions to the team  
  • Uses data to make decisions and process refinements
  • Uses strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with all internal and external project stakeholders 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • At least three years of technical project management experience
  • Experience working with Jira, or similar tools, to develop project plans
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the documentation and presentation of projects  
  • Professional management skills, including negotiation, networking, and influencing skills necessary to convey technology ideas to senior-level stakeholders
  • Experience working with financials to determine ROI and costs
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment and promote a teamwork mentality with project partners
  • Experience applying analytical thinking and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in publishing or education industries
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification
  • Knowledge of CiviCRM, WordPress, or PHP

Salary is commensurate with experience. The MLA provides generous vacation and sick time, flexible work hours, a 403(b) retirement plan, and individual health and dental plans with no shared premium cost. 

This is a full-time position requiring at least two days each week on-site at the MLA offices in downtown New York City.
