The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time Director of English Language Learning (ELL) to begin in August 2022. This is a non-tenure track, annually renewable continuing faculty position. Applicants must have at least a master’s degree in English as a Second Language (ESL) or English Language Learning (ELL) or in a related field such as Education, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, English or other language with additional hours of graduate-level coursework in ESL or ELL. PhD in one of these areas preferred. Competitive candidates will have five or more years of ESL or ELL teaching experience at the college level and two or more years of administrative experience tutoring students at the college level. The successful candidate will also have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with students and faculty from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Applicants who have experience living and/or working overseas and who are proficient in another language in addition to English are preferred. Experience using instructional technologies to teach language is required.
The Director of English Language Learning (ELL) is responsible for the academic and administrative oversight of the University of Richmond’s ELL program. The successful candidate for this position will work closely with international and exchange students, and coordinate, teach, and administer ELL-related courses and activities. The teaching load is equivalent to eight units per academic year, including a mix of classroom teaching (four units listed under the LLC rubric) and other duties (four units; e.g. tutoring responsibilities and the coordination of ELL-related activities).
Reporting to the chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLC), the Director of ELL will also collaborate with the Department of Latin American, Latino, and Iberian Studies (LALIS), as well as the Linguistics Program, the Office of International Education, Student Development, Academic Affairs and other student support services throughout campus. The Director will work with other faculty across schools in understanding and addressing the challenges that can face students whose first language is not English in an academic setting.
