The Humanities Collegiate Division and the Department of English at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) and Associate Director, who will manage the Program in Creative Writing, and teach a minimum of four courses a year in that curriculum (course load dependent on additional duties). This is a full-time position with a three-year or five-year renewable term, depending on rank, to start September 1, 2022.

In consultation with the Director of Creative Writing and the Program Manager, the Associate Director will be responsible for planning, staffing, and coordinating all Creative Writing courses, including the supervision and evaluation of unionized lecturers and Writing and Research Advisors, and will assist in the supervision and evaluation of Professors of Practice in the Arts. Teaching and the pedagogical mentoring of lecturers are central to this position, and we seek candidates proven to be highly effective teachers of Creative Writing. Possible course offerings might include fiction, including genre fiction, and/or prose non-fiction, including science, medical and environmental writing. The Associate Director will also develop the profile and mission of the Program in Creative Writing, advancing its Development Plan. The Associate Director will help to enable Creative Writing and Arts programs in the University more broadly, to develop off-campus programming with local organizations, and opportunities for student volunteering with non-profits. Course assignments and other duties of the Associate Director will be determined annually by the Director of Creative Writing.

An MFA or PhD in Creative Writing is required. Applicants must have at least one book publication as well as extensive teaching experience at the university or post-secondary level.

Applicants should submit their applications through the University of Chicago’s Interfolio website, apply.interfolio.com/95994 and upload a current curriculum vitae; the names and contact information [email, regular mail, and telephone] for three references whose letters of recommendation may be solicited; a cover letter of no more than three pages that addresses professional experience, publications, previous teaching experience, and approaches to pedagogy. Short-listed candidates may be asked to provide a teaching video.

Applications are due by November 21, 2021. Only complete applications will be reviewed. The position is contingent upon budgetary approval. Please contact Michael Fischer (mfischer@uchicago.edu) with any questions.
