Candidates should be dedicated teachers and writers of short fiction who have published at least one book (novel, novella, or collection of short stories) and achieved distinction in their writing, whose work explores the intersections of race, identity and the lived experiences of people from Latinx and/or African American heritages. Candidates must hold an MFA or PhD in Creative Writing.
The Field Professor should be prepared to teach 2 courses per semester, including introductory creative writing courses, upper-level workshops in fiction writing, first-year seminar, and introductory literature courses in their specialty. Candidates should be prepared to teach creative writing and literature courses reflecting the experiences of communities of color. They should be willing to perform public readings of their work, lead occasional craft talks for students and faculty, and participate in department service and student advising. The Field Professor will also be provided funds to invite, in consultation with our department, a visiting writer for our Kelly Writers Series once a year (https://www.depauw.edu/arts-and-culture/speakers/kellywriters/). This is a three year term position, with the possibility of a three year renewal. Additionally, the department plans to request a tenure-track position in this field in the near future. Salary will be commensurate with rank and experience and will account for the distinguished nature of this appointment. The Field Professor is eligible for programming funds and professional development funds, as well as reimbursement of relocation costs and an allowance to defray the cost of housing.
