Assistant Professor of Latinx/Chicanx literature

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of World Languages and Literatures invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Latinx/Chicanx literature, which will start in August of 2022. This is a full-time, tenure-track position. In addition to expertise in Latinx/Chicanx literature and culture, additional specializations in translation, Spanish for the professions, applied linguistics, and/or related fields are desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of scholarship, teaching experience, and professional service commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor. This tenure-track position will primarily be housed at the Palm Desert campus of CSUSB.
 
Our Spanish faculty have been involved in interdisciplinary work across campus (Healthcare Spanish, Latinx/Latin American Studies, and Spanish for Criminal Justice). In addition, they are leading study abroad programs. The section needs a faculty member to participate and continue these relationships and to build additional interdisciplinary programs, particularly in the area of Spanish for the professions. 

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

The faculty member will be responsible for teaching two general education courses in English (SPAN 2900 and SPAN 3900) at the Palm Desert campus.  In addition to courses at the Palm Desert campus, the faculty member will teach face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online courses in Spanish (undergraduate and graduate level) for the San Bernardino campus. They will participate in curriculum development, organize extracurricular academic/cultural activities, conduct student advising/recruitment at the Palm Desert campus, maintain an active research agenda, and provide service to the department, college, and university.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • ABD or Ph.D. in Spanish or related discipline by time of appointment
  • Relevant teaching experience and pedagogical training (particularly in online instruction)
  • Active research agenda
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish

Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers an M.A. degree in Spanish, B.A. degrees in Arabic, French and Spanish, and several minors including Japanese. In addition, we offer courses in American Sign Language (ASL), Chinese, Korean, and several California indigenous languages.
