Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of English

Position & Qualifications 

Hollins is searching for a generalist with a research concentration in multiethnic American literature before 1900. Secondary fields of interest are open; other areas of teaching interest should be addressed in a letter of application. The successful candidate will join a collaborative department with interconnected literature and creative writing programs; will teach engaged undergraduates at all levels from introductory courses to senior honors projects, including writing-intensive courses; and will have ample opportunities for new course development. Teaching load is six courses per year. Other duties include advising students, participating in department and university service, and ongoing scholarly activity.  

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2022, a record of successful teaching at the undergraduate level, evidence of scholarly promise and accomplishment, and a strong commitment to the liberal arts and women’s education. The institution seeks to recruit and retain outstanding candidates who exhibit a clear commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and who will enhance the diversity of its faculty and staff.   

The Department of English and Creative Writing is the university’s largest department and is internationally known for its history of supporting developing writers and scholars who go on to shape literary studies. With 12 full-time faculty members, the department offers a B.A. in English with concentrations in multicultural literature, creative writing, and literature and performance; a B.A. in Creative Writing; and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing. The department houses three student-produced literary magazines:  Cargoes (all genres), Gravel (multicultural writing), and The Cyborg Griffin (speculative fiction).
