The Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, specializing in nineteenth-century American literature and culture, to begin in the fall 2022 semester. We welcome applications from candidates specializing in American literature (roughly from the end of the Early Republic through Reconstruction)—inclusive of a range of demographic, geographic, linguistic, and theoretical configurations—and particularly encourage a focus on issues such as race, class, gender, ethnicity, indigeneity, disability, environment, and sexuality. The proximity of Clark University to the American Antiquarian Society may be of particular interest to applicants, but we seek candidates who can engage a range of research and teaching opportunities through on-campus research centers and faculty collaboratives, as well as other regional research venues. Successful candidates should be active research scholars, and able to teach American literature survey courses in addition to specialized seminars. Ph.D. is required by August 2022.

Tenure-track faculty members normally teach a 2–2 load. In addition to providing ongoing support for teaching and research, Clark offers pre-tenured faculty a reduced teaching load in the first year, as well as a semester’s sabbatical after a successful third-year review.
