Instructor of English

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional English instructor who can help advanced high school students achieve a deeper understanding of language and literature. Field of expertise is open. We especially welcome applications from candidates with specialization or teaching experience in creative writing (poetry), British literature, and global or multi-ethnic literature. Position begins August, 2022.

Applicants should have experience teaching literature and writing at college or advanced high school levels and enthusiasm for teaching motivated and talented students. Must have a Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in English or a related field. Experience teaching in virtual and hybrid environments is a plus. A teaching certificate is not required.

Courses at GSSM are taught at a level comparable to college courses. The successful applicant should be prepared to teach junior English, our two-semester, literature-based, writing-intensive sequence that carries six units of university credit in first-year-writing. They will also have opportunities to develop and teach upper-level special topics courses in their areas of specialization and interest. Special topics courses at GSSM have included world literature, Shakespeare, African-American literature, gender studies, film, drama, nature writing, science fiction, and philosophy, as well as creative writing courses in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and mixed-genre.

This is a permanent, full-time (10-month) teaching position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.
