Assistant/Associate Professor and Director of Freshman Writing - Tenure-Track

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH TENURE-TRACK

The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for a Director of Freshman English and tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year (August 15, 2022).

The Freshman English program forms a critical part of UAB’s core curriculum and helps drive the university’s deep commitments to diversity, teaching innovation, and student engagement. Over 50 instructors, including both full- and part-time, teach over 2,000 students per semester and offer more than 200 course sections per year. Freshman English collaborates closely with undergraduate academic units from across the university, including the Honors College, INTO UAB, and the University Writing Center, to support all students, offer innovative learning experiences, and maximize the opportunities available on an urban campus. Freshman English also offers a transformative two-semester developmental writing sequence that provides students extra support and small class sizes and keeps them on track to graduate by awarding the same credit as mainstream introductory composition courses. UAB has received multiple acknowledgements for supporting diverse faculty and students, including the 2021 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. In 2021, Forbes named UAB America’s No. 1 Best Large Employer and No. 4 Best Employer for Diversity.
