The Stetson University English Department is accepting applications for a full-time, 9-month tenure-track assistant professor to begin in August 2022.
The department seeks a broadly trained scholar in Transatlantic literature in the long nineteenth century (1789-1914); work that engages writing in English by historically marginalized voices is strongly preferred. Desirable secondary fields include but are not limited to scientific writing and/or ecocriticism. We seek a teacher-scholar devoted to teaching undergraduates rigorously and inclusively and who will model research and writing.
A Ph.D. in English or Literature with expertise in Transatlantic literature spanning the long nineteenth century, an active scholarly agenda, and demonstrated teaching excellence in teaching undergraduates in both general and specialized areas in English is required. We seek a student-centered colleague who is actively engaged in literary scholarship and criticism, is interested in collaborations among a broader community of undergraduates and faculty and has a demonstrated record of engaging students.
The teaching load is three courses per semester. Primary teaching responsibilities include surveys of American and British Literature, period courses in Romanticism and the long nineteenth century, one or more genre-based lower-division courses (Reading Non-Fiction, Reading Narrative, Reading Lyric, Exploring Drama), and the Text/Criticism/Theory methods course required of all majors. Teaching includes upper-division courses in the field; other courses will be based on the candidate’s expertise and may include offerings for the University’s requirements in General Education, including courses for Historical Inquiry, Creative Arts, or Culture and Beliefs requirements, First-Year Seminars, and Junior Seminars. Other responsibilities include participation in junior and senior portfolio reviews, advising, and departmental and university service. The English department is a vital community of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty writers that support the English major and minor, the Creative Writing Minor, and the MFA of the Americas program; area studies programs, the Gender Studies program, the Pre-Law advisory program, and the University Writing Program; the Sullivan Lectures series; and several prominent student organizations. DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 32,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.
