Job Summary

The Department of English and Philosophy seeks a tenure-track assistant professor of digital humanities, to begin Fall 2022. We invite applications from energetic and innovative scholar-teachers whose research in digital humanities focuses on its application to literary/textual studies. The content area is open, with a preference for but not limited to African American literature. Preference is also given to candidates with an interest in diversifying the curriculum and with demonstrated success in working with students from under-represented groups.

We understand digital humanities as an interdisciplinary field distinguished by methodological and creative engagements with digital methods and aesthetics, and with emerging collections, archives, platforms, public cultures, cultural analytics, medium theory, and cultural critique. We welcome applications from candidates whose digital humanities work directly engages literary texts, defined broadly. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated skills in cultural analytics/computational methods for interpretation.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research that suggests new and lasting approaches to the field. The faculty member will collaborate with interested colleagues in the department and across the college and university in identifying, applying, and evaluating emerging technologies that help to enhance literary and cultural studies. The candidate will also be expected to develop or collaborate with a digital humanities working group at Drexel for the purpose of integrating digital humanities in the curriculum. Applicants should also show interest or experience in pursuing grants in research and/or in teaching opportunities.

The successful candidate will teach courses in their area(s) of expertise, along with introductory courses in the undergraduate program. Drexel’s academic calendar is built on 10-week quarters; this position carries a 5-course annual teaching load (e.g., 2-2-1), with the expectation of significant scholarship. A lower teaching load may be negotiated during the first years of the appointment.

Located within the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of English and Philosophy is home to undergraduate majors in English, Philosophy, and PPE (Philosophy/Politics/Economics), as well as an MFA in creative writing. The English BA includes concentrations in literary studies, writing, and secondary education. The department has a strong record of civic engagement through community-based learning and other initiatives. Its emphasis on hands-on, applied learning opportunities results in strong career preparation for its students. The department features a strong commitment to antiracist pedagogy and practice.
