FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Brooklyn College, a senior College of the City University of New York (CUNY), invites applications for a Lecturer in Spanish/Applied Linguistics in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences with a starting date in August 2022. The position combines the duties of a language coordinator for the department with a significant teaching load in Spanish at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (MLL) is home to 9 full-time faculty and one full-time laboratory technician who are committed to helping students hone their linguistic skills for a range of professional settings including education, film and media, journalism and writing, medicine, and law. Situated within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), the MLL department shares the school’s goal to foster collaborative engagement among faculty, students, and communities, in the co-creation of knowledge. Our students build skills in critical thinking, creative expression, data analysis, and the capacity to articulate evidence-based decisions. The MLL department, and HSS at large, prepares students to be adaptive and resilient in a rapidly changing global economy, and to be effective publicly engaged world citizens.
The successful applicant will possess at least a Master’s degree or higher in Spanish Linguistics; a PhD is preferred. The applicant will have experience teaching Spanish language at the undergraduate level and will be committed to excellence in pedagogy and in student retention. The strongest candidates will know at least one other Romance language; be able to teach linguistics, foreign-language pedagogy, translation and language for the professions; and have experience advising students and engaging in administrative tasks. A priority for the department is attracting and serving the needs of heritage speakers in Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, and other languages.

- Teaching and developing curricula for undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish language and linguistics, language teaching pedagogy, and translation; if possible, another Romance language (French, Italian, or Portuguese).
- Language coordination: working with teaching fellows and adjunct faculty across languages, developing curricular and extra-curricular activities to compliment classroom teaching; observation/evaluation of instructors; organizing orientation meeting for adjunct faculty and workshops on teaching methodology.
- Administrative – advising majors and minors, transfer evaluation, evaluation of student proficiency, language placement.
- Bachelor's degree in Spanish.
- Demonstrated potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels
- Masters or Ph.D. in Spanish linguistics.
- Proficiency in a second romance language.
- Three years college-level teaching experience.
- Demonstrated potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in: Spanish language; Spanish linguistics and dialectology; translation; language for the professions; and second language pedagogical theory and methodology.
Salary commensurate with experience and credentials at the entry level. All appointments are subject to financial availability.
