The successful candidate will have a significant scholarly and professional profile and a commitment to graduate teaching. Current research in the program includes performance practice, theatre history, textual studies, rhetorical arts, intersectional Shakespeare pedagogies, and the broad history of Shakespeare’s critical heritage and theatrical reception. Teaching responsibilities will include extensive thesis supervision, and the candidate is expected to participate in the program’s broad curricular and co-curricular programming.

Statement on Diversity: MBU’s student body is diverse, and the University aspires to develop a faculty and staff that reflect its demographic. The University places a high priority on the cultivation of a community in which all students are both seen and heard. As such, we seek and encourage applications from members of groups underrepresented in higher education and with academic experience with diverse student bodies. Above all, Mary Baldwin seeks candidates eager to embrace and empower an ethic of equity, diversity, and inclusivity.

Duties and Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities include teaching, supervising, and participating in the life of the graduate Shakespeare and Performance program; maintaining an active and on-going research program and professional profile; serving on program, college, and university level committees; advising, recruiting, programming, and completing assigned departmental duties and responsibilities.

Mary Baldwin Shakespeare and Performance: Mary Baldwin University, in partnership with the American Shakespeare Center, offers the degree of Master of Letters (MLitt), leading to the terminal degree of Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Firmly grounded in the liberal arts tradition, the program offers a combination of stagecraft and scholarship, with interdisciplinary emphasis on four core competencies: acting, directing, dramaturgy, and teaching. Study proceeds from a common group of required courses, ensuring immersion in Shakespeare, his plays, the plays of his contemporaries, and the world and theatre in which he worked. All students complete a written thesis, and all students have access to the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse, the only modern reconstruction in the world of Shakespeare’s Blackfriars. Resident faculty instruction is augmented with internationally recognized visiting scholars and artists.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a demonstrable record of scholarly excellence, an established presence within the profession, and substantial graduate teaching experience at the university level with diverse student bodies. A PhD in English or Theatre is required. The candidate should have strong leadership and collaborative skills; a commitment to excellence in teaching, advising, and recruiting; and a vision for program development and innovation.

Applications: Please send C.V. and a letter of application to Program Resource Coordinator M. Finch at mlfinch@marybaldwin.edu. Please have recommendations available upon request. Deadline for consideration is Nov. 21, 2021.
