Thomas J. Kavanagh Chair in Rhetoric

The Department of English at Fordham University invites applications for the Thomas J. Kavanagh Chair in Rhetoric, a tenured position at the rank of full or advanced associate professor, to begin in Fall 2022.

Our ideal candidate will have an active, established record of distinguished scholarship in rhetoric and writing; a demonstrated commitment to engaged, student-centered teaching; and a passion for bringing forward-thinking ideas into collaborative conversation with multiple campus partners to advance the curricular, programmatic, and pedagogical development of writing within English and across the university. We are open to any area of specialization within rhetoric and writing studies but are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching interests and experiences equip them to lead innovative initiatives related to cross-curricular and interdisciplinary writing; digital writing and rhetoric; literacy and multiliteracy studies; translingualism and multilingual writing; and/or public, community, and civic rhetoric and writing. Expertise in anti-racist, accessible, and new media pedagogies is particularly welcome, as are other areas of expertise related to Fordham’s distinctive institutional mission and its strategic plan to educate for racial and social justice.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in rhetoric and writing or a closely related field. The Kavanagh Chair will collaborate closely with the Writing Program Director(s) and will have opportunities to help shape curriculum in writing and rhetoric at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including by contributing courses to an undergraduate minor in Public & Professional Writing and a Graduate Certificate in Rhetoric and Writing, both currently in development. In accordance with the Jesuit pedagogical principle of cura personalis, Fordham commits itself to quality instruction in small writing classes. The successful candidate may also work closely with faculty in and beyond English to support efforts in program-building, curriculum revision, professional development, student recruitment and retention, and more. We especially hope that our new colleague will be interested in one or more of the following initiatives: coordinating with faculty across disciplines to develop writing curricula and enhance writing-intensive facets of the Core; cooperating with the development office on grant-writing and fundraising activities to advance writing-related initiatives; and/or exploring the possibility of establishing digital writing labs and other spaces.

The English Department, a vibrant heart of intellectual life at Fordham, operates across two campuses in New York City: the Rose Hill campus in The Bronx, and the Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan. Our new Kavanagh Chair will be sited at Rose Hill but may contribute to the cross-campus work of our dynamic, diverse, collegial, and nationally and internationally recognized faculty. They will have opportunities to offer vision and strategic direction to a range of exciting and transformative initiatives in writing and rhetoric, English, and at Fordham more broadly.
