The Department of World Languages and Cultures invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Spanish to begin August 2022. We seek outstanding teacher/scholars dedicated to excellence. 

We are looking for candidates with a specialization in the field of Global Hispanophone Studies whose work might include, but is not limited to, Africa, the Mediterranean, and Asia. We are particularly interested in scholars working in one or more of the following fields: Diaspora and Transnational Studies, Ecocriticism, Digital Humanities and Media Studies and Cultural Studies. 

Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in liberal arts and sciences education, contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, assist in curriculum development, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to working with women and underrepresented minority students through teaching, mentoring, and research are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will 1) have a doctorate in Spanish or a related area and be able to teach Spanish at all levels 2) be committed to contributing effectively to curriculum development efforts, advising, and mentoring students, providing service to the department and college, and establishing a competitive program 3) be actively involved in program promotion, development, and support by connecting with other Departments and Programs, including the Gordon-Zeto Center for Global Education 4) be able to create, develop, and direct a program abroad and/other opportunities to provide students with a exposure to the global Hispanosphere, contributing to the internationalization of the department curriculum and institution.

Ph.D. or ABD close to completion in Spanish or relevant field required by starting date of appointment. Native or near native fluency in English and Spanish required.. Ability to teach Portuguese is a plus. Strong and innovative research agenda.

The candidate must have the ability to develop and teach undergraduate courses in areas of greatest student demand and institutional interest (involving interdisciplinary and developing cross-listed courses with other Departments and Programs at Spelman). Relevant teaching and curriculum experience is required. The candidate must have a working knowledge of instructional technologies. Lastly, excellent organizational and management skills is desired.
