Assistant Professor, Modern & Contemporary Literatures of Spain, Department of Spanish & Portuguese

Assistant Professor, Modern and Contemporary Literatures of Spain
Department of Spanish & Portuguese
New York University Faculty of Arts and Science

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University invites applicants for an assistant professor tenure-track position, starting September 1, 2022, (subject to administrative and budgetary approval) in the field of modern and contemporary literatures and cultures of Spain (18th century to the present). The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate level.

The Department will consider applications from scholars working in any area of inquiry but is especially interested in receiving applications from scholars who focus on  the history, literature, or anthropology of immigration and diaspora;  questions of race, racism and anti-racism; gender and feminism; and postcolonial and decolonial approaches to the study of Spain in the world.

Individuals from historically under-represented groups are encouraged to apply; preference will be given to candidates who are in the process of completing their PhDs (though PhD must be in hand by the start date of the position), and candidates who are no more than three years past degree. For full consideration, candidates should submit their application materials before November  30th, 2021. The search, nonetheless, will remain open until the position is filled.

Our department is composed of a diverse group of scholars who have worked together to create a rigorous and inclusive environment for research and teaching. In addition to literature, history, and philosophy, faculty in our department work in a range of interrelated areas in the field of cultural studies (including archival studies, animal studies, sexuality studies, migration studies, post-colonial studies, and transatlantic studies) while encouraging new approaches to the study of visual culture, print culture, sound, and performance studies. We encourage applicants to look at the faculty bios on our website to see the breadth of our interests and to imagine how they might fit into —and expand— the intellectual profile of our community.

We are especially interested in applicants whose work challenges the field often called Peninsular Studies in terms of geographic, linguistic, theoretical and cultural scope; and who see themselves as forming an integral part of a community of scholars that supports NYU’s dedication to a very broadly conceived field. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with many units and projects adjacent to the department, such as NYU Madrid, the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, and the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies, as well as with other university institutes and centers, such as the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies and the Center for the Humanities.

Application materials: Cover Letter, CV, 1-page Teaching Statement, 1-page Diversity Statement, Writing Sample (book chapter or published article preferred), and Names and Contact Information for 3 References. To apply please go to following link: http://apply.interfolio.com/96921
