Assistant Professor, English (Literary and Creative Writing Studies)

The English Studies faculty at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi is pleased to invite applications for a 9-month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of English in Literary and Creative Writing Studies. We seek a multidisciplinary scholar and creative writer to join our emerging interdisciplinary faculty in the fall of 2022.

We seek applicants who specialize in the cultural histories and theories of race, ethnicity, and indigeneity; dispossession and empire; revolution, resistance, and decoloniality; diaspora and migration; or non-Anglophone literary traditions. We are especially interested in applicants whose creative and critical work takes a comparative, hemispheric, or transnational approach. Successful candidates will effectively articulate how their scholarship and creative activity will enrich the interdisciplinary nature of our department and resonate with students across cultural and educational divides.

The successful candidate will teach in a growing BA and MA program, which includes scholars in Literary Studies, Writing Studies, Creative Writing, and Applied Linguistics. Teaching expectations include a 3-3 course load comprising service courses, upper-division major courses, and graduate courses in the master’s program. These might include workshops in fiction writing as well as seminars on literary history and form(s) of the novel.

The Department of English at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi offers English majors a choice in either a Literary or Writing Studies emphasis, curricula for secondary English certification, Writing for Non-Profits and TESOL certificates, and Creative Writing Minor, Literary Studies Minor, and Technical and Professional Writing Minor. The graduate program provides an interdisciplinary educational experience by requiring advanced study in Literary Studies, Writing Studies, and Applied Linguistics.

Required Qualifications:

• PhD with concentration in one or more of the following areas: English, Comparative Literature, Caribbean Studies, Latin American Studies, Africana, African Diaspora, and Black Studies, Afro-Latinx literatures and history, or Atlantic Slavery Studies and migration. Advanced ABD will be considered; degree must be conferred at the time of appointment.
• Teaching experience in literary history and form(s), and teaching experience in creative writing, with an emphasis in prose, concentration in fiction. Genres might include fiction, creative non-fiction, hybrid.
• Record of active publication in creative writing, emphasis in fiction or hybrid writing fiction/nonfiction, venues with demonstrated potential for future publications; evidence of scholarship or demonstrated scholarly potential in appropriate field.
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion in classroom and/or other campus settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

• MFA in Creative Writing.
• Experience teaching and advising first-generation students and historically underserved communities. This may also include professional development in anti-racist assessment and pedagogical practice, multilingual/translingual teaching, or work in an interdisciplinary learning community.
• Experience in writing outreach with other disciplines and programs, including community outreach/engagement.
• Experience in professional publishing or editing.
• Demonstrated evidence of an ability to teach in a range of modalities (face to face, asynchronous online, hybrid, synchronous online).
