Assistant Professor – Urdu Language, Literature, and Performance

The Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in the areas of Urdu Language, Literature, and Performance. The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in the Department of Language Studies (70%) and English and Drama (30%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an expected start date of July 1, 2022 or shortly thereafter.

Candidates must hold a PhD in South Asian studies, Urdu language and literature, performance studies or a cognate discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement our language offerings and enhance existing departmental strengths. We are especially interested in scholars whose teaching and research engage theatre and popular performance traditions, digital and other mass media, diaspora literary cultures, and/or contemporary cultural production in Pakistan or India, alongside more classic topics in Urdu literature. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues in the Center for South Asian Civilization, which has a distinctive dual mission: to foster partnerships with the South Asian community in the Peel region, and to take South Asia as a key site for thinking about what it means to be human in the twenty-first century. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Departments of Language Studies and English & Drama at the University of Toronto Mississauga and will also hold a graduate appointment in the Centre for Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto and teach graduate courses that bring Urdu literature and performance into a comparative dialogue with other national or linguistic artistic traditions.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a representative writing sample, a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, letters of reference and the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
