The Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Comparative Literature (LLCL) at Florida Atlantic University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Contemporary Latin American Literature and Film, to begin on August 8th, 2022. Candidates with expertise in Southern Cone or Mexican literature and histories of film, cinema's relationship to marginalized communities, or Third Cinema are encouraged to apply. Secondary areas of specialization in literary theory; global, transnational, or diaspora studies; and/or cultural studies are desirable. Applicants should demonstrate strong interdisciplinary interests. PhD in Spanish or related field required by the appointment date.
Candidates will be expected to teach a 2/3 load. Responsibilities include teaching Spanish language, culture, and literature courses in lingua at the undergraduate and graduate levels (MA in LLCL; PhD program in Comparative Studies); and ability to teach in English in other relevant areas such as Latin American Studies, literary theory, and film. Superior oral and written proficiency in Spanish and English is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience teaching, provide evidence of a research program and sustained research potential, and demonstrate a commitment to community outreach.
The successful candidate will join faculty contributing to the overall hemispheric studies emphasis of the college’s Americas’ Initiative, which takes advantage of FAU’s unique location at the nexus of South America, North America, and the Caribbean to bring different spaces of the western hemisphere into conversation by providing for a for discussion for scholars in all disciplines in the humanities (https://www.fau.edu/artsandletters/college-initiatives/americas-initiative/). We particularly encourage candidates whose research interests enable them to leverage the social and cultural resources available in South Florida, and who seek to contribute to the department’s Spanish Heritage Learners’ Program.
Scholars will have opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in the department as well as across College disciplines through our college-wide interdisciplinary PhD program, the Caribbean and Latin American Studies Certificate program, the Ethnic Studies Certificate program, and the Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies’ MA program and undergraduate certificate program, among others. Participating faculty will also have access to our University’s Peace, Justice and Human Rights platform for additional research and programing support. Collaborative multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary extramural grant opportunities will be encouraged through internal seed grants and robust institutional grant-development support.
