The Department of English and Philosophy at Idaho State University invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position in Composition and Rhetoric at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The position begins August 15, 2022. Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric or a closely related field required by August 1, 2022. This position will remain open until it is filled. Priority consideration will be given to applications received prior to December 17, 2021.
We seek applicants with an active research agenda in any area of composition and rhetoric or writing studies; an established record of excellence in teaching; a strong interest in teaching writing at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum; education or experience relative to administering a writing program; and a commitment to working thoughtfully with instructors who have widely varying levels of experience and formal training in the teaching of first-year writing, including TAs, dual enrollment high-school teachers, part-time instructors, full-time lecturers, and tenured faculty.
The faculty member in this position will:
- Teach three courses (9 credit hours) each semester in a variety of delivery modes (in-seat, asynchronous online, or hyflex [i.e. with simultaneous in-seat and online delivery]) and at a variety of levels, most commonly first-year writing and courses in the professional writing track of the English major and minor, and intermittently graduate courses in writing pedagogy;
- Sustain a consistent record of publication in the field of composition and rhetoric or writing studies;
- Participate in the shared governance of the department and university through engaged, conscientious, and collaborative departmental, university, and professionally-related service;
- Actively mentor assigned graduate student TAs and, with additional compensation, assigned dual enrollment high school instructors in the teaching of first-year writing;
- Direct or serve on graduate student project, thesis, and dissertation committees as needed.
Also, commensurate with training and experience, the appointee should expect to rotate into the role of Director of Composition, a position that carries a reduced teaching load.
