The Department of Classical & Modern Languages in the School of Arts & Letters at Truman State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish with a focus on Hispanic Linguistics to begin August 2022.  A Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics is required; ABD will be considered with Ph.D. completion required by August 15, 2022.

Responsibilities:  Teaching responsibilities include providing classroom instruction in lower and upper division Spanish curriculum, including courses in Spanish Phonetics and History of the Language.  Scholarly activity consistent with Truman’s teacher-scholar model is expected.  Additional duties include academic advising, mentoring of students in research and other experiences, and providing service to the department and University.

Applicants will be evaluated on:

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness in Spanish at the university level
  • Evidence of superior performance in graduate level courses
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish
  • Strong oral and written skills in English
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills
  • Compatibility with the department’s needs, including specialization in Hispanic Linguistics, and the ability to teach a translation course(s).
  • Commitment to the liberal arts and sciences as a teacher-scholar
  • Evidence of mentoring students in transformative experiences such as undergraduate research, service-learning, internships, study abroad and cultural activities.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and education.  The benefits package includes life, health and disability insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.  Promotion and awarding of tenure is based on success as a teacher-scholar; a departmental policy on Promotion and Tenure is available upon request.

The Community: Located in northeast Missouri, Kirksville is a cultural and economic hub in the region. In addition to being the home of Truman, Kirksville is the birthplace of osteopathic medicine and features a medical school, dental school and community college, and the Kirksville School District is consistently recognized for academic excellence. The community takes pride in several annual events including the Round Barn Blues Festival and the FLATS Trail Half-Marathon. The charming downtown area features an arts center, as well as several local shops and restaurants.
