The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Johns Hopkins University seeks to appoint at the rank of Associate or full Professor a scholar of German with a distinguished research record, an international reputation, and experience in program direction. The program in German is committed to the philosophical exploration of literature from 1700 onward. The candidate should have broad background in German thought and literature in a comparative and interdisciplinary context and demonstrated specialization in the 18th and 19th centuries. Desirable fields of expertise include: the relation of art and politics; literature and science from the Enlightenment onward; and the German encounter with Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Projected start date: July 1, 2022.
Consistent with the University’s goals of achieving excellence in all areas, we will assess the comprehensive qualifications of each applicant. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is committed to hiring candidates who, through their research, teaching and service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
A Ph.D. is required
Application Instructions: Applicants should submit via Interfolio a cover letter, c.v., 2-3 letters of recommendation, and two samples of scholarly publications (article or book chapter). Rather than supplying separate teaching and diversity statements, candidates are invited to address these dimensions of their practice in the cover letter. Committee review of materials will begin December 13, 2021.
