Assistant Professor of Composition and Rhetoric and Director of Composition

The English program and the School of Humanities at The University of Southern Mississippi invite applications for a tenure-track position in composition and rhetoric to begin Fall 2022. The successful candidate will direct the composition program and also teach undergraduate composition along with a graduate course in writing and pedagogy. 

In addition to teaching, the Director of Composition will develop composition curriculum, conduct program assessment, mentor graduate instructors, schedule teaching assignments, and collaborate with other faculty teaching composition. There is GA support for this position, as well as the opportunity to work with other units on campus like the Honors College, the Center for Faculty Development, and others.

The first-year composition program at The University of Southern Mississippi is committed to fostering student engagement through reading and writing and providing students with strategies and resources for communicating across academic, professional, and public settings. Our composition courses play an important role in equipping students and helping establish a culture of writing across the university. The successful candidate will illustrate a commitment to teaching first-year writing and diverse student populations. 

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in English, with an emphasis in composition and rhetoric (or closely related area) by the time of appointment, experience with writing program administration and assessment, evidence of an active research agenda, and a commitment to teaching and service.
