Assistant Professor of African American Literature

Job Summary:

The English Department at Marist College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of African American literature to begin in August 2022. A secondary specialization in Africana Studies literature, Latinx literature or contemporary global literature is preferred. Depending on teaching and research interests, candidates will be expected to contribute to one of our interdisciplinary programs such as Africana Studies, American Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, or Global Studies. Candidates with an expertise or interest in digital humanities or service learning pedagogy are especially welcome. Candidates must demonstrate strong or potential accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing Marist's commitment to achieving academic excellence and diversity.


This position is part of a cluster hire and we will welcome four new faculty members as part of the Africana Studies and Latinx & Latin American Studies cluster. These faculty members will join faculty in the departments of English, history, modern languages and cultures, and political science who focus on Africana Studies and Latinx & Latin American Studies.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in English, Comparative Literature or Africana Studies (focus in literature) is required.
  • Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness is required.


Essential Functions:

  • Successful candidates will be able to teach First Year Seminar courses, and general education and upper level courses that contribute to diversifying our curriculum.
  • In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, faculty participate regularly in-service activities for our students, Marist College, and the community.

The English Department that includes 17 faculty is one of the largest on the Marist campus, and offers a BA in English with concentrations in literature, writing, and theatre.
