The Division of Humanities & the Arts at the City College of New York seeks candidates for a one-year Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow - Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) in the area of Latin American and U.S. Latinx Studies for appointment in Spring 2022.

This post-doctoral teaching fellowship includes release-time to support research at the Hispanic Society Museum and Library. We seek a recent Ph.D. specializing in some aspect of Afro Latin America from the Early Modern period until the present day. Scholars may be focused on specific populations in countries like Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Panama, Venezuela and Mexico, but Afro indigenous and transnational approaches (particularly dealing with immigration) are welcome as well. In addition to conducting research and teaching, the fellow will develop and supervise innovative experiential learning opportunities in the form of internships that place students with the Hispanic Society.

We invite applicants with PhDs from interdisciplinary programs (such as Black or Africana or Latinx or Latin American Studies) provided they employ humanistic research methods; as well as applicants with PhDs  in any humanities discipline(s) including but not limited to History, Philosophy, Literatures, Music History, Art History, Theater History, or Media Studies. The fellow will be appointed to the most appropriate Humanities department. Contingent on satisfactory performance reviews, at the end of the year-long fellowship the College will appoint the fellow to a tenure-track line in our newly formed Black Studies Department.

The College and the Division of Humanities and the Arts are currently working to build the Program into a Black Studies Department that collaborates extensively with other departments. The Black Studies Program runs our annual Langston Hughes Festival, which since 1978 has celebrated the literary legacy of the poet laureate of Harlem by awarding a medal to the most distinguished writers of the African diaspora. City College is also home to the Dominican Studies Institute, the nation’s first university-based research institute devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent in the United States and other parts of the

The Hispanic Society Museum and Library, founded in 1904, holds more than 750,000 items books, manuscripts, visual art, sculptures, maps, letters, and periodicals documenting Iberian and Latin American histories and cultures from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It includes sculptures from the first millennium B.C., documents from the eleventh century, and artwork of colonial Latin America that highlights the multi-faceted cultures and people of the Americas.

This position is supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities American Rescue Plan grant.


Ph.D. degree Afro-Latin American Studies or related field.  Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
