Assistant/Associate Professor Urdu Literature

Habib University invites applications for a position in Urdu Literature at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Comparative Humanities program. Having the credentials and experience to teach courses in the specific academic area of Urdu literature, and the broader domain of South Asian literature, in a program milieu that emphasizes Comparative and World approaches to the study of literature. The candidate hired for this role will be expected to teach, every semester, and contribute to leading and reviewing, the team-taught Jehan-e-Urdu (‘The World of Urdu’) course in Habib University’s Liberal Core Curriculum.

The successful candidate will play an important role in teaching courses on major themes and figures in Urdu Literature and South Asian Literature for the literature concentration, minor, and program core sequence courses. The university strongly encourages and supports faculty research in their area of intellectual interest in literature, and there are going to be significant committee service expectations given that this is a growing program and university.  

Fall appointments begin August 1st and Spring appointments begin January 1st.

Qualifications: The candidates must have completed or must be in the final stages of a doctoral degree in the relevant field from a leading global institution recognized for its strength in this field. Ideal candidate will possess excellent teaching and scholarly skills, will be able to work with a diverse population of students and colleagues, will enjoy influencing the intellectual growth of their students, will be effective in institutional service, will be passionate about undergraduate research and is excited to work with colleagues across disciplines. Experience studying in and/or working in a liberal arts environment will be an advantage. 

Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities include: teaching undergraduate courses, active engagement in institutional service, professional activities, student mentorship, curriculum planning and review. The annual teaching load is 5 three- or four-credit courses. This position will play a critical role in supporting both the comparative humanities majors and liberal core of the University.
