About the Department  

The English Department has 33 tenure-line faculty members and offers B.A. programs in Creative Writing and Literature with or without a secondary teaching endorsement, an M.F.A. program in Creative Writing, and an M.A. program in English Studies. About the Position          

The Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning September 16, 2022. This is a position in English Education with an emphasis in Composition. The successful candidate will offer instruction to pre-service secondary English education students in the teaching of writing and contribute to the department's professional writing, literacies, and rhetoric minor.

Position Responsibilities: Standard quarter system teaching assignment (currently 2-2-2), with specialty courses at the undergraduate and Master’s levels; general education courses and other courses depending on the candidate’s interests and departmental needs; exemplary teaching, including fulfilling teaching responsibilities in ways that support an equitable and inclusive learning environment for students; a rigorous program of scholarly activity; service to the department through a range of activities including advising and contributions to the development of programs and curricula.

Required Qualifications 

Ph.D. in English or a related field with an emphasis in English education, at time of application or ABD at time of application (degree must be completed by June 15, 2023).

Middle or high school teaching experience

Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching

Potential for strong scholarship and publication in fields such as writing, rhetoric, language, literacy studies, and/or writing pedagogy at the secondary and college level

Ability to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching in middle or high school in the last five years

Experience in teaching a range of writing genres such as digital and multimodal genres of writing, inquiry and research writing, public and professional writing, anti-racist writing assessment and pedagogy, first year composition and rhetoric for high school students

Demonstrated achievements in the areas of culturally responsive teaching, anti-racist pedagogy, and social justice-oriented writing instruction

Demonstrable secondary areas of expertise such as ELL, multilingualism, and/or language variation

Relevant professional development work in the schools and/or community

Experience with and/or interest in establishing a local chapter of the National Writing Project
