Lecturer - Writing (English) in Bronx, New York

<p style="text-align:start">The Department of English invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position in Professional Writing (PW), beginning Fall 2020. Candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.</p> <p style="text-align:start">Candidates should have a strong publication history in mainstream or new media publications in any PW specialization (such as health and science writing, business writing, technical writing, writing for non-profits, multimodal or social media composing, branding and storytelling, fashion or sports or arts writing) and/or several years of professional experience as a writer or journalist in an organization (such as a private company, media outlet, non-profit, or government entity). Multimedia experience, including video, podcasting, photography, and design skills, is a definite plus, as is editing experience, including topic or story development, copyediting, and proofreading.</p> <p style="text-align:start">Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of teaching excellence. Lehman students taking PW courses include both English majors and majors from various pre-professional majors (including Business and Accounting, Health Sciences, Speech Pathology, and Social Work), as well as Professional Writing minors, Professional Communications minors, General Education students, and graduate students in the PW Writing track that we are developing within the English M.A. Onsite and online PW courses emphasize not only writing genres and skills, but editing and publishing (for the academy, workplace, and community), in preparation for writing internships and related careers.</p> <p style="text-align:start">In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate PW courses, the successful candidate will be expected to teach English general education and composition courses, and to offer career workshops. The candidate will also be expected to advise students and to provide service to the department, college, and university via committee, administrative, supervisory, and other assignments normally associated with a full-time Lecturer appointment. Evening teaching may be required. Lecturers at Lehman teach 24 hours (8 courses) per year. Lehman College and CUNY funding is available through competitive grants for research (including research with students), travel, and professional development. One of nine departments in the School of Arts and Humanities, English values its ties with sibling departments &ndash; such as African American Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, and Journalism and Media Studies &ndash; while it also serves the larger College through courses in First-Year Composition, General Education, and Writing-in-the-Disciplines (for majors in Natural and Social Sciences and in Health Sciences). English students specialize in Literature, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and (at the M.A. level) Writing and Rhetoric.</p> <p style="text-align:start"><strong>QUALIFICATIONS</strong></p> <p style="text-align:start">Bachelor&#39;s degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.</p> <p style="text-align:start">Strong preference for M.A. or M.S.
