Media/Digital Studies and Transnational Black Studies

MA Aesthetics and Politics Program/BFA Critical Studies

The School of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and the MA Aesthetics and Politics program invite applications for a full-time position in Media/ Digital Studies. The successful candidate’s research will focus on the politics of “new media” and transnational Black Studies, with the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, or the Middle East as possible geographical areas of expertise. We seek to appoint an emerging teacher-scholar whose work complements that of the program’s internationally recognized faculty and distinguished visitors. The candidate should have a promising research portfolio that demonstrates knowledge of such fields as materialist media studies, feminist science and technology studies, digital/software/platform studies, or critical surveillance studies. Applicants should evidence an ability to teach both undergraduate and graduate students in this multi-faceted arts environment, and we welcome applicants from diverse, interdisciplinary backgrounds that involve both theory and practice.

In addition to housing two distinct graduate programs that offer courses to graduate students from across CalArts, the School of Critical Studies provides the liberal arts component of the institute’s BFA curriculum. In Fall 2017, the MA Aesthetics and Politics program re-launched as an expanded one-year full time, one-year low residency program, enabling new forms of pedagogy, distance learning and online discussion platforms. The successful candidate will deliver to both the BFA and graduate curricula, our graduate programs’ distance learning curricular component, the School’s public events, as well as the daily governance of the graduate programs, the School and the Institute. Reflecting its experimental mission, CalArts does not follow the hierarchy of a conventional tenure-rank system but offers renewable multi-year contracts and a faculty salary advancement plan (FSAP) and merit program.

CalArts and the School of Critical Studies value the individuality of artists and welcome the addition of unique and inventive voices to our diverse, collaborative community. We seek to employ faculty who can engage our diverse communities of learners at the highest levels of artistic endeavor and critical thinking. We welcome candidates with demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students of varied backgrounds, capabilities, perspectives, social identities and gender expressions. CalArts is an equal opportunity employer.
