Position Description

UCSC invites applications for a faculty position in South Asian studies, with an emphasis on issues of economic or social justice. This position can be made at the rank of advanced assistant professor (tenure track), or to one of the two tenured ranks, associate professor or early full professor.

We seek an interdisciplinary scholar and/or artist of South Asian Studies who engages and extends theoretical, historical, and aesthetic paradigms of justice. We especially welcome applications from scholars/artists who foreground issues of caste, gender, sexuality, and class across a range of temporalities and regions within South Asia. Some specific areas of interest include but are not limited to the following: feminist and/or queer/trans history, social movements and development, Dalit studies, environment and sustainability, aesthetics, or cultural studies.

The successful candidate will be housed in a department in one of three divisions (Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences) based on their disciplinary expertise and interest. The faculty member will be expected to participate in programmatic and curricular development, to teach and supervise students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to contribute to the development of the undergraduate South Asian Studies minor. UCSC’s newly established Center for South Asian Studies (CSAS) will provide an additional forum for research engagement and community outreach, and the candidate will be expected to serve as center director in the near future. For more information on our center, please visit: http://csas.ucsc.edu/. We are particularly interested in applicants with leadership experience, a demonstrated record of teaching excellence, and a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of professional life.

UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Service (HSI) and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) with a high proportion of first-generation students. We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and minorities who are underrepresented in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
