Visiting Assistant Professor of Early American Literature and Culture

The Department of English Literature at Swarthmore College is seeking to hire a Visiting Assistant Professor of early American literature and culture, with expertise in Native American and Indigenous studies and/or environmental humanities. This one-year appointment will start in Fall 2022; the teaching load will be two courses per semester. Our department trains approximately twenty-five majors (along with approximately fifteen minors) each year. Our curriculum balances flexibility in paths of study with breadth of coverage through historical requirements and a required theory course. Our faculty are active in interdisciplinary collaboration with programs including Black Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Peace and Conflict Studies. In coordination with the department chair, the Visiting Assistant Professor will design and offer introductory, mid-level, and upper-level courses within the area of specialization. Whenever possible, we promote faculty autonomy in course design.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a record of teaching undergraduates in a way that reflects ongoing research interests. ABDs are encouraged to apply, with a plan to have the PhD in hand by August 2022.

The strongest candidates will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to creative teaching and an active research program that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds.
