Postdoctoral Position in The Teaching of Writing

The Department of English at the University of Delaware invites applications for a postdoctoral teaching position starting August 16, 2022. The successful applicant will be engaged in the theory and practice of teaching critical writing and will be asked to draw on their pedagogical and scholarly training to design a seminar-style course introducing students to writing at the university. The successful candidate will join a vibrant growing cadre of postdoctoral colleagues in our department.

We are seeking exceptional candidates who hold a PhD by the time of appointment in any of the areas of English Studies represented in our department including rhetoric and composition, professional and technical writing, literary and cultural studies, English education, film, creative writing, environmental humanities, print and material culture studies, African American studies, critical race and ethnic studies, and transatlantic/transnational studies. We seek applicants capable of engaging with our students, developing new programming, and contributing to our community with expertise, imagination, and passion. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in the teaching of writing within the English department and throughout the university. Responsibilities will include teaching in our Composition Program as well as developing writing-related programs and initiatives. The teaching load for these positions is three sections per semester, six per year. At least five sections of those classes will be ENGL110 Seminar in Composition, and, when possible, one other class as determined by the needs of the department. Classes will be taught on both the main campus in Newark and through the Associate in Arts Program across the state. Candidates will need their own transportation. There will also be opportunities to teach honors and second-language learners. The position is a 75% teaching load with 25% dedicated to service and research.

Postdoctoral personnel will have opportunities for professional development to enhance their teaching and expand their pedagogy in their own fields and to benefit from the department's strong affiliations with interdisciplinary studies programs on campus, organizations associated with UD faculty (including the Winterthur Museum, Folger Library, Hagley Museum, and The Library Company of Philadelphia), and numerous other archives and resources in the region.

The Department of English at the University of Delaware is within the College of Arts and Sciences and is a dynamic and collegial collection of scholars and teachers devoted to interdisciplinary research and teaching. We offer a diverse set of programs, including literary studies, creative writing, professional writing, drama, film, ethnic and cultural studies, and English Education, and our faculty lead programs in environmental humanities, material culture studies, medical writing, and journalism, among many other fields. In addition to the English major and several interdisciplinary minors, we offer a strong English Education major. We are a collegial department whose mission is to assemble a diverse faculty in a broad range of interdisciplinary fields. With some of the top scholars and educators in their respective fields, we are an intellectual community determined to lead the way in energizing and redefining the integrated arts of critical research and writing across the spectrum of print and digital media.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary is $48,000 per year, with support for research and travel, and mentoring from senior faculty in composition and the English Department. The UD benefits package is one of the best in the nation. The contract is for one year and is renewable for two additional years.
