The Department of English at Wichita State University is now accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in fiction writing to begin fall 2022. Wichita State offers an MFA and undergraduate creative writing program. Our MFA students take a three-year course of study, which includes creative and academic courses; in their final year, students work one-to-one with a faculty member on a final project. Wichita State’s MFA Program was established in 1974 and is one of the oldest MFA Programs in the country. Recent visiting distinguished writers in residence have included Kim Addonizio, Jericho Brown, Andrew Sean Greer, Laura Kalpakian, Antonya Nelson, Michael Parker, Ariana Reines, and Mary Ruefle.
The requirements for the position include an MFA or Ph.D. in Creative Writing with a concentration in fiction at the time of appointment; a demonstrated commitment to literary excellence with at least one book of fiction in print or press by a nationally recognized publisher; and a record of successful teaching. The Department is also interested in qualified candidates who have experience in teaching students from diverse backgrounds as well as interest in fostering an equitable and inclusive creative and scholarly environment at an urban-serving institution. The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes as needs arise in creative writing, composition, and literature at the undergraduate and graduate level based on their qualifications; direct MFA theses; and participate in recruitment efforts. The position carries a 3/3 teaching load. Other responsibilities will include active engagement with publishing and other creative and scholarly practices; assisting in maintaining the department’s Creative Writing Program; and service to the department, the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the university.
