Lecturer in Arabic Language

Amherst College and the Five College Arabic Initiative Program invite applications for a lecturer in Arabic language, beginning July 1, 2022.  The successful candidate will offer courses in elementary through advanced levels of the Arabic language and will be responsible for teaching six semester courses or equivalent per year. Given Amherst’s distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, successful candidates will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work toward supporting a broadly diverse community. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell grant recipients; 43 percent of our students are domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international students.  Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. This is a full-time appointment with an initial three-year term and the possibility of renewal for an additional three-year term as a lecturer, which is typically followed by five-year renewable appointments as a senior lecturer.  Reappointments are contingent upon positive reviews.  The Arabic lecturer will be a joint appointee in the Five College Arabic Initiative Program and will be based on the Amherst College campus. This lectureship is one of five Arabic language positions in the collaborative Five College Arabic Initiative Program. The Arabic lecturers play a vital role in an innovative learning model that accommodates the needs of students of all levels of proficiency spread among the five campuses. Joint appointees normally teach on more than one campus.

Candidates must have native or near-native fluency in Arabic and English and will have demonstrated experience and excellence in teaching Arabic language courses at the elementary through advanced levels. The academic field of specialization may be Arabic language and literature, linguistics, second language acquisition, language education, or another related field.  The Ph.D. degree is required. Interested candidates should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three confidential letters of recommendation, and a personal statement outlining their philosophy of language teaching.  Candidates are asked to apply electronically to https://apply.interfolio.com/99269.   Review of applications will begin on February 7, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Professor Wako Tawa (wtawa@amherst.edu).
