Language Learning Center Director (10 months)

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, at Loyola University Maryland, is inviting applications for a Language Learning Center Director position, beginning August 1, 2022. The Director oversees the day-to-day operation of the LLC; hires, trains, and supervises student staff; teaches up to two introductory or intermediate language courses per year (Spanish preferred, but other languages taught by our department considered); and develops and implements strategies and special projects for the growth and development of the LLC. 

  • Daily operations of Language Learning Center (LLC)

    1. Establish and post hours of operation, making sure that the LLC is open and functioning and being available for consultation with faculty, students and staff during those hours.
    2. Hire, train and supervise the student staff of the LLC
    3. Make sure that the existing technology in the LLC is in good working order
    4. Administer the budget of the LLC and oversee an ongoing planning process which facilitates the timely maintenance, repair, replacement, and upgrading of equipment so that the LLC stays abreast of changes in technology
    5. Assist the faculty in implementing courseware, streaming video and other support technologies
    6. Schedule and reserve lab use for 26 faculty in an equitable way
    7. Plan and supervise periodic training sessions with the faculty and staff regarding the use of technologies in the LLC 
    8. Take the initiative in investigating and implementing new technological approaches as needed
    9. Maintain faculty webpages
    10. Update the online “Cultural Events Calendar”
    11. Organize and maintain LLC Media catalog collection
    12. Liaise with Office of Technology Services, Office of Digital Teaching and Learning, Facilities, and other relevant departments
  • Teaching: In order to accurately assess the developing relationship between the Center and the classroom, the Director will teach up to two introductory or intermediate language courses per academic year.
  • Develop or assist with special projects related to the LLC (examples below):
    • Develop summer camp opportunities for local children utilizing LLC space and equipment
    • Re-purpose LLC spaces as official testing centers for proctored placement tests and online course examinations
    • Organize and execute Virtual Language Exchange Program
  • Investigate and initiate the implementation of new technological approaches as needed
    -Identify revenue streams and create programming possibilities for the LLC 
    -Measure and predict usability of space
    -Analyze data about how LLC space is currently used 
    -Contact university and community partners to research how best to utilize the space and develop potential partners
    -Write grants and proposals for special projects

 

The LLC Director must have the following required skills:

  • Strength as an administrator and knowledgeable technician
  • M.A. in Spanish or other language taught in our department or related field 
  • Knowledge of and experience with instructional software, modern language broadcasts, network interfacing, instructional design, and emerging as well as existing technologies
  • Demonstrated experience in or potential for implementing courseware, streaming video, and other support technologies while making sure that the existing technology in the Center is in good working order
  • Ability to maintain a website and media catalog
  • Knowledge of and interest in innovations and best practices in technology and pedagogy 
  • Professional and interpersonal skills necessary to hire, train, supervise and manage staff
  • Ability to administer the budget and oversee an on-going planning process which facilitates the timely maintenance, repair, replacement, and upgrading of equipment
  • Ability to work in a collegial and collaborative manner with department and university colleagues, including in the Office of Technology Services and the Office of Digital Teaching and Learning
  • Ability to facilitate and promote both student and faculty use of the Language Learning Center
  • Ability to assist and train colleagues through professional development 
  • Demonstrated experience in or potential for seeking grants to support and develop the LLC 
  • Commitment to expanding uses for the LLC, including but not limited to: an official Testing Center for students taking online courses; placement testing; interdisciplinary and diversity-related projects; virtual language exchanges
  • Commitment to implementing pedagogy-related special projects for the LLC
  • Awareness of and interest in high impact practices in line with the mission of Jesuit higher education.
