Position description

The Department of Literature at the University of California, San Diego seeks to make a full-time, tenure track appointment of an Assistant Professor of Central American literary and cultural studies with emphasis on film/visual cultures, environmental humanities, afro-descendant diasporas and/or legal studies (open historical period). This position is one of 14 new ladder-rank faculty positions in the Latinx Cluster Hire Initiative (LCHI) at UC San Diego. The LCHI aims to increase faculty diversity, innovative research, and culturally relevant curriculum and mentorship through increased engagement and collaboration between various departments across campus with the Chicanx and Latinx Studies (CLS) and Latin American Studies (LAS) programs.

The ideal candidate will be interested in working within a world literature department with strengths in critical theory, social justice, and cultural, ethnic, and gender studies, where faculty members work in multiple languages, geographies, and historical periods.

Faculty hired under LCHI will be expected to design and teach undergraduate courses that align with the CLS and/or LAS academic programs and will be expected to serve as faculty affiliates and mentor students in one or both programs. The candidate's regular teaching load will include courses in the Department of Literature as well as the Latin American Studies and/or Chicanx-Latinx Studies Program.

Faculty hired under LCHI will have multiple opportunities to contribute to UC San Diego's transformation from an emergent Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) to a full-status HSI that meets the curricular and cultural needs of Latinx, URM, and first-generation students. This includes faculty engagement with scholars and students across disciplines to address issues of race and racism, access and equity, and social and political debates pertinent to Chicanx, Latinx, and / or Latin American Studies, while also contributing to the interdisciplinary Central American Studies across the university.

The position is housed in a multilingual Literature Department with faculty and students engaged in literary, comparatist, historical, and cultural studies. We especially welcome candidates whose professional experience, community engagement, and personal background have facilitated their understanding of and ability to better serve students from traditionally underrepresented communities in higher education. Faculty are expected to have an inclusive approach to mentoring and advising that incorporates working with women and underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students.

Salary and level of appointment are based on qualifications and UC pay scale. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
