ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION
ABOUT GOUCHER COLLEGE:
Named one of the top 10 most innovative colleges in the country by U.S. News & World Report, Goucher College has also been recognized as a College that Changes Lives. Located in Baltimore, Maryland, Goucher is a private, coed, liberal arts college dedicated to teaching students to be complex problem solvers who are prepared for the jobs of the future. A Goucher education focuses on creating lifelong learners through an interdisciplinary, international education that requires 100% of students to study abroad.
Goucher College's Writing Program invites applications for a full-time, ten-month, tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Composition starting in August 2022. We are looking for a dynamic teacher-scholar who will teach our first-year composition courses, advanced academic writing courses, and develop upper-level undergraduate writing and rhetoric courses for our Major in Professional and Creative Writing and our Minor in Professional Writing. The course load for this position is five four-credit courses per academic year. In addition to teaching responsibilities, we seek candidates who will be committed to ongoing scholarly research, as well as service to the Writing Program, the college, and the liberal arts. Salary will be dependent upon qualifications and professional experience.
Our Writing Program builds a bridge between creative and academic writing, and simultaneously establishes a campus-wide interdisciplinary initiative. We draw on current research in the field of Rhetoric and Composition, specifically from Teaching for Transfer, as we continue our work in centering anti-racism in our pedagogies. In our recently remodeled writing curriculum, students move from a one-semester foundational writing course to a Writing Enriched course in their second year and a Writing in the Discipline course in their third year. This vertical writing curriculum is completed by a review of a college writing portfolio in their senior year.
Additionally, our new Major in Professional and Creative Writing prepares students for a life of writing. Students may choose between two tracks: Professional Writing and Rhetoric or Creative Writing. In both tracks, students pursue a process-driven and imaginative approach to their writing. The major itself is versatile, giving students the options to excel in the current and future workplace. In addition to our thriving major, we offer minors in Professional Writing and Rhetoric and Creative Writing. We are seeking candidates who can engage at every level of this innovative writing curriculum.
The position requires a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or in a closely related field (candidates must have an earned Ph.D. by the start date of August 2022). The area of specialization is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose interests include one or more of the following: professional writing, technical writing, digital cultural rhetorics, or writing program administration.
Please submit the following application materials online:
statement explaining the applicant's teaching philosophy and scholarly interests
statement of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion that demonstrates the ability to work across diverse groups in the classroom and across campus
list of three references including contact information. At least one of these individuals should be able to specifically address your experience and potential as a teacher
unofficial graduate transcripts (official graduate transcripts must be provided at the time of hire).
Candidates selected for first-round Zoom interviews will be required to provide evidence of teaching effectiveness.
First consideration will be given to applications submitted by January 27, 2022. The successful candidate will be subject to a background check as a condition of employment. Interested applicants must apply online at http://goucher.interviewexchange.com
