Director of World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio

The Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for the Director of the World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio, with the title of Teaching Assistant Professor of Language and Humanities Technologies, to enhance a successful and dynamic department dedicated to the teaching of world languages through technology and innovative methods. The Director of the World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio should have demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, and service, with the ability to teach Digital Humanities courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and also the interpersonal skills and collegiality necessary to support various language and culture programs. The Director should also have demonstrated expertise in technology-enhanced research and teaching in Languages and Digital Humanities, with expertise in emerging media forms, computational methods for interpretation, and public engagement through Digital Humanities, especially through interactive media such as video games.

The Director of the World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio (WLHS) will devote 40% of their time to the strategic leadership and management of the Studio, and oversight of its operations day-to-day, working together with the Studio's Assistant Director. Strategic direction of the Studio will include collaboration with faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students on interdisciplinary DH projects, as well as offering workshops on DH approaches and methods and training on language teaching with technology and digital media. They will devote 30% of their time to their own research projects, and 10% to department, college, and university service. The Director will also be expected to teach 2 Digital Humanities courses per year, comprising 20% of their performance evaluation.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a world language other than English conferred by the start of the position

  • Native or near-native fluency in English

  • Required second language

  • Demonstrated engagement with current and emerging trends in Digital Humanities

  • Demonstrated ability to use Digital Humanities tools and programs such as R, XML, Tableau, Omeka, ArcGIS/StoryMaps, Articulate Storyline, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience in using interactive media for language teaching

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated understanding of computational methods of analysis used in Digital Humanities, including, for example, text mining, natural language processing, social network analysis, and interactive visualization

  • Experience in structuring and administering digital technologies and information systems

  • Experience with the management and use of VR headsets in university lab settings

  • Experience with and basic command of the Unity and/or Unreal game engines

  • Experience with teaching or learning a language other than English with less commonly taught world languages welcomed
