French Lecturer

Job Summary

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Georgia College invites applications for a full-time French lecturer position beginning in fall semester of 2022 (start date August 1, 2022). We seek a dynamic and creative colleague who enjoys teaching French language courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, but primarily at the introductory- and intermediate-levels. The incumbent will teach fifteen credit-hours per semester and be an integral and equal part of a group of faculty committed to curricular innovation and to providing exciting, proficiency-based courses to majors, minors, and non-majors.

 

Department Information

The Department of World Languages and Cultures provides language instruction in French, Spanish, German, and Italian, a minor in French and Spanish, and a unified B.A. degree in World Languages and Cultures, with concentrations in French and Spanish. We offer faculty-led study abroad programs in Spain and in Chile and are looking to expand our offerings to include French-speaking countries. We work closely with the International Education Center to direct students toward other study abroad opportunities and to create GC Border-Free team-taught courses with partner universities. Our work is supported by a state-of-the-art Language Resource Center, which sponsors a peer-tutoring program, one-on-one tele-tandem virtual exchanges with students at universities overseas, international coffee hours, language skills workshops, and workshops to train faculty in technologically-enhanced language pedagogies. Our faculty work closely with students through community-engaged learning projects and mentored undergraduate research as part of Georgia College’s innovative GC Journeys program, which seeks to embed high-impact practices throughout a meaningful and compelling undergraduate liberal arts curriculum.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in French or a related field. Applicants should have the Ph.D. in hand by the date of appointment, but we will consider exceptional candidates who are ABD. (Candidates must complete the Ph.D. within the first year of appointment.) Applicants must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in C.S. 3.7.1 (www.sacscoc.org, faculty credentials): the completion of a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in French. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.


Other Required Qualifications
We seek applicants with native or near-native fluency in French and English, who have an interest in teaching and mentoring in a public liberal arts context. We seek applicants who love language teaching and are able to work collegially and effectively with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds, contributing, through their own unique perspectives and experiences, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. We seek applicants with strong training in L2 methodology, superior language teaching skills in a proficiency-based environment, and a commitment to methodological innovation and creative teaching strategies.

Responsibilities

Teaching
This position involves teaching fifteen credit-hours per semester of culture-rich and proficiency-driven French language courses, primarily at the introductory and intermediate levels. Opportunities will be available, on a rotating basis, to teach upper-division French content courses and English-taught topical freshman (GC1Y) or sophomore seminar (GC2Y) courses.
All faculty in the department share the responsibility of teaching core curriculum courses and introductory- and intermediate-level language courses.

Professional Development 
All faculty members are expected to develop within the profession. While publications are welcome, lecturers are not required to publish. Some examples of professional development activities encouraged of lecturers include attending conferences, presenting at professional meetings, applying for grants, participating in professional organizations, and engaging in scholarly inquiry that informs classroom instruction.

Service
All faculty members contribute service to the Institution. Service includes recruiting majors and minors, mentoring students, attending and encouraging students to attend co-curricular activities organized by the department, engaging in committee work, advising a student organization like the French Club, developing a study abroad program, or participating in special programs or projects.
