Job Description:

The English Department at Baruch College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time lecturer position in Writing to begin August 25, 2022. The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to our mission of educating one of the most diverse student bodies in the U.S. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who are under-represented in the profession across color, creed, race, class, ethnic and national origin, physical ability, and gender and sexual identity. Successful candidates will collaborate with an engaged full-time and adjunct writing faculty to design and teach courses in first-year writing. This position represents an investment by the College to increase student contact with full-time faculty during students’ crucial first year.


Through student-centered pedagogy, innovative curriculum design, co-curricular programs and student mentoring, our First-Year Writing Program faculty contribute to the College’s first-year student retention and academic success rates. In addition, lecturer writing faculty will have the opportunity to work with colleagues and the Writing Program Director to further develop a shared first-year text implemented in fall 2019 and accompanying teaching resources, as well as to design, implement, and assess specialized curriculum and faculty training for SEEK first-year writing courses, Learning Communities, and multilingual and multimodal composition.


Lecturer faculty are considered “master teachers” who occupy faculty lines at the College that are focused almost entirely on teaching (with some service requirements but with no research expectations). Lecturer track faculty teach 24 hours per year with no research requirements. Courses in the First-Year Writing sequence (English 2100 and 2150) are 4-credit hours, so teaching responsibilities entail three courses per term, with an average of 75 students total. Taking on administrative or other college service positions with reassigned time attached, as available, can reduce teaching responsibilities.


Lecturer faculty make a substantial contribution to the Writing Program at the College through participation in Writing Program assessment, curriculum design, and faculty mentoring. Lecturer faculty participate as full faculty members of the English Department, the College, and the University. Service may include serving on committees and contributing to projects and programs, especially those related to teaching and learning. In their fifth year, Lecturers will be eligible for the Promotion to a Certificate of Continuous Employment (tenure-like status) based on teaching excellence and dedicated service.

Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.


Candidates who hold an MFA or an MA in Rhetoric and Composition, English, English Education, or equivalent field will be given preference (an MFA or MA in these fields is required). Candidates with additional graduate coursework or who are ABD will be considered; however, potential candidates should note that these positions do not require a scholarly/research/publishing agenda. Participating in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and writing studies and pedagogy conferences is encouraged, and lecturer faculty are eligible for professional development and travel funds.


Candidates for Full-Time Lecturer in Writing Positions should have demonstrated ability in the following:

  • Teaching students of diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, and educational backgrounds 
  • Creative curriculum and assignment design in research-based academic writing at the post-secondary level
  • Active, student-centered pedagogy and significant student mentoring experience
  • Use of technology to support teaching and learning
  • Excellent teaching and peer classroom evaluations


Preferred Qualifications

At least three years of demonstrated, successful experience teaching first-year composition at the college level.


With this search, we are particularly looking for candidates who have the following specialized experience and demonstrated knowledge:


Commitment to Diversity: Teaching a diverse student body, Baruch faculty should have a strong understanding of and experience with the literacy practices of multilingual students, incorporating diverse rhetorics and literatures in their courses as well as pedagogical practices informed by translingual and multilingual composition theories.


Digital Literacy and Rhetoric: Since our second semester writing courses include a multimodal composing requirement, and given the importance of digital rhetoric knowledge in our students’ lives, lecturer faculty in the Writing Program should show evidence of creative use of digital platforms and multimodal composing in their courses.
