French Visiting Assistant Professor, 2 year term

The Department of Languages and Cultures at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University invites applications for a two-year position as visiting assistant professor of French beginning August 2022. The successful candidate will have expertise in contemporary (post 1800) French language, literature, and culture, native or near native fluency in French and English, evidence of excellence in language teaching at multiple levels, a strong commitment to undergraduate education, and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. Specialization is open, but preferred areas include the Francophone diaspora, media studies, gender studies, climate studies, social justice. Ability to help build a small French program, contribute to experiential learning opportunities, teach and mentor students from diverse educational backgrounds, and create an inclusive educational environment should be addressed in the application and/or cover letter.  Preparedness to contribute to the general education curriculum is desirable but not required. Responsibilities

 

  • Teach three 4-credit courses a semester.
  • Engage in departmental service and activities.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students

 

Qualifications

Required: 

  • PhD or ABD (or the equivalent)  in French/Francophone literary and cultural studies 
  • Primary area of specialization will be contemporary (post 1800) French and Francophone literatures and cultures
  • Demonstrated language teaching effectiveness at multiple levels
  • Native or near-native fluency in French and English
  • Potential to provide effective advising to students
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice

Preferred:

  • Ability and flexibility as needed to build a small French program and create extracurricular programming on campus
  • Potential to contribute to experiential learning opportunities for our students at CSB|SJU  (e.g. international experience or experience in study abroad, internships, community learning)
