Lecturer and Assistant Professor of English, 2 positions

ENGLISH Writing and Rhetoric. Elon University invites applications for two separate positions in the English department beginning mid-August 2020: a tenure-track assistant professor and a lecturer, both with a focus on writing and rhetorical studies, including first-year writing and professional writing. Requirements: Degree in Writing and Rhetoric, Professional Communication, or a related area. Applicants for tenure track positions are required to hold a PhD. Applicants for lecture track positions must hold a minimum of a master’s degree.

 

Preferred areas of specialization include publishing and editing, first-year writing, multimedia and digital rhetorics, technical writing, entrepreneurship, cultural literacies, and/or applied linguistics. We are interested in candidates who want to teach first-year writing and would contribute in innovative ways to the department's first-year writing community of practice. We welcome candidates with industry expertise or experience teaching or working outside of higher education. The successful candidates will teach courses within the Professional Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) major, the First Year Writing Program, the Elon University Core Curriculum, and/or other English Department courses. There may be opportunities to develop digital publishing collaborations with students in the Center for Undergraduate Publishing and Information Design (CUPID).  A record of excellence in and deep commitment to undergraduate teaching is required. Candidates who have experience working with a diverse range of people and who can contribute to the climate of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experiences in their cover letter.

 

Faculty members in tenure track appointments have a standard teaching load of six courses per academic year. Evaluation criteria for tenure track appointments include evidence of effective, high quality teaching, contributions to the life of the university, professional activity and scholarly activities of high quality. Faculty members in tenure track appointments are eligible for travel funds and are eligible to compete for Faculty Research and Development funds.

 

Faculty members in lecture track appointments have a standard teaching load of seven courses per academic year. Evaluation criteria for lecture track positions include evidence of effective, high quality teaching, contributions to the life of the university, and professional activity. Lecturers are ongoing faculty members with fixed-term periods of employment, and a continuance and promotion process, but no expectation of tenure. Faculty on lecture track appointments are eligible for travel funds, equal to that of tenured/tenure track faculty, and are eligible to compete equally for Faculty Research and Development funds.
