The Department of English at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor, beginning September 1, 2020, in Composition & Rhetoric with a specialization in the research and teaching of writing and the administration of writing programs for students with diverse backgrounds. The selected candidate will have a 2-2 teaching load and will also direct our English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. The ESL Director oversees approximately 70 sections per year of intensive coursework in two areas: speaking & listening, and reading & writing for academic purposes.


The ESL Director works closely with Composition faculty who direct other programs, including the First Year Composition, Composition Tutoring, and Professional Writing & New Media programs.

  • Ph.D. in English, rhetoric & composition, writing studies, or related field; must have Ph.D. in hand by August 2020.
  • expertise in teaching ESL/ELL, second language writing, translingual, or multilingual approaches to teaching and researching writing
  • Record of effective teaching and dedication to the teaching of students from underrepresented groups.
  • Preferred candidates will be prepared to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses from our course offerings, as well as to develop new courses in their areas of interest.
