The Context

The Department of English Language and Literature consists of 18 faculty members contributing to an active research culture that places equal weight on high-quality teaching. The Department features three undergraduate program options (English Literary Studies, or ENGL; English and Creative Writing, or ENCW; and Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse Studies, or WRDS) with approximately 300 majors, and an MA program in Text/Community/Discourse with a standard cohort of about 10 students completing the 12-month program.

Brock University is located on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Agreement. Many First Nations, Métis and Inuit people live and work in Niagara. And we are reminded the region’s great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous people. Brock’s commitment to Reconciliation and Decolonization is one of four strategic priorities of Brock’s 2018-2025 Strategic Plan. The University is undertaking institution-wide efforts, led by the office of the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement, to enhance existing Indigenous programs and courses, increase the number of Indigenous faculty, and develop new supports for Indigenous students. These efforts centre Indigenous ways of knowing and doing and involve consultation with Indigenous communities both within Brock and beyond.
